Hasina reached the mausoleum of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman around 10am on Wednesday marking the death anniversary and placed a wreath on the altar.
A contingent of Bangladesh Armed Forces gave state salute at that time, while the bugle played a tune of grief. The prime minister stood in solemn silence for some time.
Hasina, along with her sister Sheikh Rehana, then offered prayers in front of the grave.
Bangabandhu, along with most of his family members were killed by a group of junior army officers on this day in 1975. Hasina and Rehana survived the massacre as they were abroad at that time.
Later, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and other AL leaders placed a wreath on Bangabandhu’s grave.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Awami League leaders then paid their homages.
Cabinet members, AL leaders and higher officials of army and civil administration offered special prayers organised by Gopalganj district administration at around 11am in the mausoleum complex.
Bangabandhu’s grave complex later opened for all and thousands of people poured into the venue to pay their respects.
