According to local sources, a network allegedly established during the Awami League government&#8217;s tenure continues to operate under different names and identities.Sources claim that Nazim Uddin, a resident of North Katoli in Ward No. 10 of Chattogram city and a former vice-president of the Chhatra League, formed a syndicate under the cover of an OMS dealership during the previous government. The group is accused of diverting subsidized rice and lentils intended for poor and low-income citizens and selling them in the open market at higher prices for greater profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local residents allege that after the political changeover on August 5, 2024, Nazim Uddin went into hiding. Subsequently, his nephew, Robiul Hossain Hridoy, allegedly assumed leadership of the syndicate. According to the allegations, Hridoy continued the same practice, selling government-subsidized food commodities in the open market at inflated prices to maximize profits.Local sources further claim that although Robiul Hossain Hridoy identifies himself as a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), no official organizational position or designation could be independently verified. Instead, he is alleged to have used banners and promotional materials featuring influential BNP leaders to create an impression of political influence while operating the syndicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to anonymous local sources, Hridoy has allegedly been running the operation by providing regular payments to members of the administration, police, intelligence agencies, and officials of the Food Department. Sources also allege that he portrays himself as being closely connected to an influential political family in the country.However, no statement from Robiul Hossain Hridoy could be obtained regarding the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the matter was brought to the attention of a senior official of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the official described the allegations as extremely serious. The official stated, <em>\u201cThe misappropriation of food commodities allocated for poor people under the government&#8217;s social safety net programmes is unacceptable under any circumstances. If the allegations are proven true, necessary legal action will be taken.\u201d<\/em>Members of the local community in North Katoli believe that an investigation is necessary to determine whether OMS food products are reaching their intended beneficiaries.
