Once, massive rallies and crowded public gatherings symbolized political strength. Today, a smartphone has become an equally powerful tool. A single video, livestream, or social media post can reach millions within minutes, enabling people to participate in political movements without being physically present.

This shift has become increasingly evident across South Asia, where recent student- and youth-led movements have demonstrated the growing influence of digital platforms. Bangladesh’s July Uprising, student protests in India over alleged examination irregularities, and anti-corruption demonstrations in Nepal were all rooted in genuine social and political grievances. However, digital platforms—and the algorithms that power them—significantly amplified their reach and impact.

The movement in Bangladesh began with demands for reform of the government job quota system. As violence, public dissatisfaction, and political tensions escalated, it evolved into a broader nationwide uprising. Similar patterns have emerged elsewhere in South Asia, where concerns over governance, accountability, and declining trust in public institutions have driven young people to the streets. While digital platforms did not create these grievances, they accelerated the spread of information, extending the movements’ influence both domestically and internationally.

The speed of information has fundamentally changed modern politics. Whereas political movements once took weeks or months to gain national attention, a viral video, eyewitness account, or trending hashtag can now dominate public discourse within hours. Research suggests that social media algorithms tend to prioritize content that triggers strong emotional responses—particularly anger, fear, or hope—allowing emotionally charged content to spread more rapidly than nuanced or context-rich reporting.

Bangladesh’s July Uprising highlighted both the opportunities and the risks of this digital environment. On one hand, ordinary citizens were able to document and share events in real time, increasing public awareness and visibility. On the other hand, misinformation spread just as quickly, making social media a powerful force in shaping public opinion.

These developments raise important questions. Are algorithms accelerating political mobilization? Does widespread online engagement accurately reflect public support, or do platform designs simply make certain issues more visible than others? These questions have no simple answers and require careful, evidence-based discussion.

History also offers an important lesson: replacing an old political order is often easier than building effective, transparent, and accountable institutions. Social movements can unite citizens around demands for change, but governing requires competent institutions, transparent decision-making, effective administration, and accountability to the public. When movement leaders become part of the government, citizens have the right to scrutinize their experience, organizational capacity, policy priorities, and commitment to accountability. The same standards should apply equally to all political actors.

The growing influence of algorithms on politics is not unique to Bangladesh; it is a global challenge. Much of today’s political discourse takes place on digital platforms controlled by a handful of multinational technology companies. While these platforms have expanded opportunities for civic participation, they also play a significant role in determining which information reaches the public and which remains largely unseen. Governments around the world increasingly view the flow of information as a strategic arena of competition.

Recognizing this reality does not diminish the legitimacy of popular movements, nor does it suggest that every protest is driven by foreign influence or algorithms. Such oversimplifications risk obscuring the genuine social, economic, and political factors behind public unrest. Instead, strengthening democracy in the digital age requires greater transparency in platform algorithms and recommendation systems, independent oversight of major technology platforms, improved media literacy among citizens, and stronger state institutions capable of responding effectively to both legitimate public movements and coordinated information campaigns.

As Bangladesh reflects on the second anniversary of the July Uprising, the country’s experience offers a broader lesson. The movement expressed a generation’s aspirations for justice, accountability, and people-centered governance. Yet the true measure of political change lies in building institutions capable of earning and sustaining public trust over the long term. In the age of algorithms, the future of democracy depends not only on politicians and protesters, but also on creating a digital information environment that is transparent, accountable, and consistent with democratic values.

Special Correspondent: As Bangladesh marks the second anniversary of the July Uprising, the country’s political landscape is undergoing a profound transformation.
