A 65-year-old woman in Shariatpur\u2019s Vedarganj upazila has alleged that a long-running dispute over her ancestral and maternal property has forced her to leave her homestead and live in a rented house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamala Begum, a resident of Panchalia village under Ramabhadrapur Union, said she has been unable to live in her own home and visit her parents\u2019 graves because of an ongoing dispute with Dulal Chowkidar and members of his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Kamala, she has faced harassment and physical attacks at different times in connection with the property dispute. She alleged that her only residential room has been locked by Dulal Chowkidar, leaving her with no option but to stay in another person\u2019s house on rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have no children and my husband is no more. At this stage of my life, I want to return to my parents\u2019 homestead and visit their graves,\u201d Kamala said emotionally. \u201cI only want the right to spend the final years of my life on my own land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamala claimed that she has been prevented from accessing land inherited from her father as well as property given to her by her mother. She has appealed to the local administration, law enforcement agencies, government offices, journalists and human rights activists, seeking an investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has also urged the relevant authorities, including the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), to investigate the allegations and take legal action if any wrongdoing is established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamala\u2019s younger sister, Halima, also alleged that the activities of Dulal Chowkdar and his family have created tension in the area for a long time. However, the allegations need to be independently investigated and verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several local residents told journalists that tensions had developed between Dulal Chowkdar\u2019s family and a number of people in the village. Some residents also alleged that they had faced intimidation, threats of legal harassment and other irregularities. These allegations could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local Union Parishad member Nur Islam Hawlader said he had heard about dissatisfaction among villagers over the activities of Dulal Chowkdar and his family. He, however, stressed that any allegation should be addressed through a fair and impartial investigation before legal conclusions are reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local sources also alleged that Dulal Chowkdar had faced a criminal case in the past and had served time in jail. Some residents further claimed that a recent clash involving him had taken place in the area. These claims also require independent verification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamala additionally alleged that she and her mother had been physically assaulted by Dulal Chowkdar and members of his family in the past. Attempts to obtain a response from Dulal Chowkdar regarding the allegations were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The allegations came to public attention after Kamala held a press conference attended by local journalists, including Swapan, president of the Shariatpur District Journalists Press Club, journalist Shahadat Hossain, Kaler Kantho correspondent Nasir Khan and journalist Jamal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breaking down in tears at the press conference, Kamala appealed to journalists for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJournalists are my last hope. You work for the rights and justice of ordinary people. I request you to help me regain access to my parents\u2019 homestead, my own home and their graves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also called on the government to conduct a fair investigation and ensure justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI want to return to my own home. I want to live peacefully on my own homestead during the final years of my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kamala has urged the local administration, the concerned police station and the district administration to conduct an impartial investigation, establish the facts and take action in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
