Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Saiful Islam is set to visit Japan for research activities under a Japan-Bangladesh joint research project, as well as as a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the invitation of Tohoku University, Professor Dr. Saiful Islam will leave Dhaka for Japan on the night of October 5, 2026, by China Southern Airlines to participate in research-related activities. During his stay in Japan, all expenses related to his research visit will be borne by the Government of Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Dr. A. B. M. Saiful Islam, a professor in the Department of Soil Science at PSTU and a renowned soil scientist, is one of the key researchers and a JSPS fellow in the Japan-Bangladesh joint research project titled \u201cReduction of arsenic contamination from rice fields through engineered biochar application: A fundamental understanding of metallomics at the soil-biochar interface.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Japanese research team is led by Professor Dr. Tomoyuki Makino of the Department of Soil Science at Tohoku University, while the Bangladesh research team is led by Professor Dr. A. B. M. Saiful Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other researchers involved in the project include Dr. Hachib Mohammad Tushar, Director of International Students Affairs at PSTU, and Dr. Habib Mohammad Naser, Planning Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Dr. Shamim Mia, a professor in the Department of Agronomy at PSTU who is currently serving as a professor at the University of New England in Australia, is the principal investigator and coordinator of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Dr. Saiful Islam is a distinguished pedologist with extensive research experience in soil science. He previously earned his PhD for his research on the classification of soils in the Chalan Beel region of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is currently serving as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University. Through this visit, he is expected to further strengthen research collaboration between Bangladesh and Japan, particularly in the fields of soil science, arsenic mitigation and sustainable agricultural practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
