The wage board would be formed tomorrow to determine a new minimum wage structure for garment workers, Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury said today.Under these circumstances, there is no reason for workers to continue their agitation, the minister said at a press briefing held at Sramo Bhaban in Dhaka.The briefing was held after a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), where leaders of both associations accepted the workers’ demand for a wage board.At the meeting with the BGMEA and BKMEA leadership, the issue of paying outstanding wages to workers was also discussed. The leaders said they would coordinate with factory owners to take initiatives to clear the arrears as quickly as possible.The minister emphasised that since concrete steps had been taken regarding both the formation of the wage board and the payment of outstanding wages, there was no need for vandalism or factory closures. Such actions could damage the garment industry, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While workers at various factories were continuing their duties, some outsiders were coming in to instigate them, Ariful said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He urged the media to use video footage to clearly identify the actual workers and those participating in the agitation.The minister further mentioned that discussions were held regarding the payment of workers’ salaries by the seventh of every month. However, if factories remained closed, production and supply chains would be disrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If owners failed to deliver goods to buyers on time, they would not receive payments, which could ultimately create difficulties in paying workers’ wages.The minister urged workers to return to work, stating that the government had already taken initiatives to fulfil their demands. Therefore, owners, workers and all stakeholders must play a responsible role in maintaining stability in the garment sector.
