Bashundhara Residential Area, often dubbed the “Mini Singapore” of Bangladesh, is known for its strict security measures. With round-the-clock surveillance and active security personnel, the planned residential area generally offers little scope for criminal activities.

However, a recent incident involving the snatching of a woman’s bag and mobile phone has raised concern. The suspect, identified as Golam Rafi Khan, was detained within 36 hours of the incident by security personnel of the Bashundhara Residential Area after they analysed CCTV footage and images of the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.

Security is considered a top priority in the Bashundhara Residential Area. Security personnel are deployed at different roads and key points, while CCTV cameras keep the area under constant surveillance. As a result, efforts are usually made to identify any unusual incident as quickly as possible.

Recently, a woman was allegedly robbed of her bag and mobile phone while walking through the residential area. Following the incident, security personnel began collecting and reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area.

After analysing the footage, they identified a person suspected of involvement in the snatching. They also collected images of the motorcycle allegedly used during the incident. Based on the information gathered, they began efforts to locate the suspect.

As part of the operation, Golam Rafi Khan was detained within 36 hours of the incident. He reportedly lives in a house on Road No. 10 of I Block in the Bashundhara Residential Area. According to people familiar with the matter, he has been living in the area for around 16 years.

Security personnel claimed that after being detained, Khan admitted to his involvement in the snatching incident. He also reportedly claimed that he was addicted to yaba, a form of methamphetamine commonly found in Bangladesh. Security personnel said they recorded a video of his statement.

The CCTV footage, photographs of the motorcycle and the video containing the suspect’s alleged confession have been preserved. The relevant information and evidence have also been handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation, according to সংশ্লিষ্ট officials.

Khan was later handed over to the police for legal action. Police are expected to take the necessary legal steps in connection with the incident.

The swift response by security personnel in the Bashundhara Residential Area made it possible to identify and detain the suspected offender within a short time, according to people concerned with the matter.
