Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that the public will witness increased activity from law enforcement agencies starting tonight.
He affirmed that he has given clear instructions to the forces, and people will feel the impact after sundown.
He made these remarks on Monday, during a press briefing following a core committee meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
When asked about growing public demand for his resignation due to the deteriorating law and order situation, the adviser responded with sarcasm, saying, “Resignation is one thing, but some people have already conducted my funeral prayers. Working in the Home Ministry has given me the unique blessing of experiencing my own Janaza while still alive.”
Responding to questions about why he held an emergency press conference at 2:30 AM despite claiming that the situation was under control, he explained, “If this were a previous situation, you would have learned about the incident much later. But yesterday (Sunday), within just 30 minutes of calling, you were all present. I know you work day and night, and we do too. This was to demonstrate that the Home Affairs Adviser does not only brief during the day but also at night when necessary.”
He further added, “The police force is now in a better state than when I first took charge. There is still room for improvement, and they are making efforts to enhance their operations. I believe things will gradually improve.”
When asked why such incidents continue despite the ongoing ‘Operation Devil Hunt,’ he responded, “The operation was launched to ensure swift action when such events occur. In Rajshahi, for instance, three individuals were arrested immediately after the incident. We have taken legal action against officers-in-charge (OCs) who hesitated to file cases, suspending them as needed. This would not have happened in the past. You have seen that several senior officers have been reassigned based on your reports. I urge you to report the truth. When foreign media spread false narratives about us, you played a responsible role by presenting the facts.”
