Hefazat-e-Islam supporters blocked two major regional highways in Chattogram for three and a half hours this morning following the death of the organisation’s activist in a road accident.
The activists started the demonstration around 8:00am on the Chattogram-Khagrachhari and Chattogram-Rangamati highways, causing severe traffic congestion on both routes.
Police said that the Hefazat supporters set up barricades near the north gate of the Hathazari Madrasa on the Chattogram-Khagrachhari highway, while another group obstructed traffic near the College Gate of the Chattogram-Rangamati road. Police managed to convince the protesters to clear the road around 11:30 am, restoring normal traffic flow, said Additional Police Superintendent (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Md Tarek Aziz.
Yesterday afternoon, Maulana Sohel Chowdhury was injured when a bus hit his motorcycle in front of a primary school along the Chattogram-Rangamati highway in Raozan upazila.
Locals rushed him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
