At least eight people, including six police personnel, were injured during a clash in Patuakhali Sadar upazila last night.

Police said the clash took place at Palpara Bazar between 10:00pm and 11:30pm.

Among the injured are one sub-inspector (SI), two assistant sub-inspectors (ASI), and three constables of Sadar Police Station.

Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaz Ahmed said that the clash broke out between two groups over a land dispute.

“Upon receiving information, we sent police to the spot. When they tried to bring the situation under control, some people attacked the police. We are investigating the incident and taking necessary legal action,” he added.

According to locals, the clash ensued when a group led by a local criminal, Sohel Majhi, attacked BNP leader Mofizul with sharp weapons following a longstanding land dispute.

On information, police rushed to the spot. However, sensing their presence, Sohel’s men attacked them with sharp weapons, leaving SI Russell, ASIs Zahid and Rahman, and three constables injured.

Joint forces later conducted an operation, firing blank shots to disperse the attackers and restore order. The injured were rescued and taken to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.

Critically injured Mofizul was referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment, while four injured policemen were admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, police said.

Superintendent of Police Md Anwar Zahid visited the injured police officers at the hospital later that night and assured them of all necessary medical support.

He said an investigation is underway to identify those responsible, and legal action will be taken accordingly.
