The Election Commission (EC) has prohibited carrying mobile phones within 400 yards of polling centres during the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election and referendum on February 12.A circular, signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Md Shahidul Islam, was sent yesterday to returning officers across the country in this regard.According to the directive, only presiding officers, police in-charge, Ansar members, general Ansar or VDP personnel, and two Ansar members using the Election Security 2026 application will be allowed to carry mobile phones inside polling centres. However, the ban has drawn sharp reactions. Many took to social media and questioned the intention behind the move. They said journalists and election observers would face difficulties in carrying out their responsibilities if they are barred from using phones near polling centres, as the circular does not specify anything in this regard. Many criticised the decision, calling it “unnecessary,” “restrictive,” and “against transparency”.

One Facebook user wrote that such a ban would make it harder for citizens to document irregularities, if they take place.

Many also demanded that the decision be withdrawn.
