Rescue operation continues; locals say at least 30 children were inside the madrasa when the hillside collapsed
Three children were killed after a landslide buried a madrasa in the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar amid heavy monsoon rains. Rescue operations are continuing.The identities and ages of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately.The incident took place at a madrasa in Sub-block A/3 of Camp-5 in Ukhiya when a hillside collapsed onto the building at around 2:00pm today, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Nazmul Islam Bhuiyan said.So far, the bodies of three children have been recovered. Rescue efforts are continuing to locate and rescue the remaining victims,” he added.Nazmul said he was on his way to the scene and would be able to provide further details after reaching. He could not confirm how many children were inside the madrasa when the landslide occurred.
Camp officials said the landslide struck the madrasa while children were attending classes.
However, local Rohingya residents said at least 30 children were studying there when the hillside collapsed.
Rescue workers continued searching for people who might still be trapped under the debris.Earlier, from early Monday until dawn today, eight Rohingya refugees were killed in three separate landslides in the refugee camps following days of heavy rainfall.
