Staff Correspondent : A criminal case has been filed against blogger and writer Abir Hossain before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Cognizance Court in Bogura over allegations of publishing derogatory remarks about Islam online. The court has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations.
According to court sources, the case was filed on 8 June 2026 by Shamima Akter under Sections 295, 295A, and 298 of the Penal Code, 1860. The complainant alleged that Abir Hossain intentionally published offensive comments about Islam on the internet, hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.
The complaint states that the allegedly offensive content was published on the website mdabirhossain.com and on X (formerly Twitter).
Following a preliminary hearing, Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun took cognizance of the complaint and ordered the Bogura PBI to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
According to court observations made during the hearing, the alleged statements could disrupt public order and pose a threat to religious harmony. The court also instructed the relevant authorities to take necessary legal measures and directed the investigating agency to remain vigilant in maintaining law and order while conducting the investigation.
When contacted, a PBI official declined to comment in detail, stating that the matter is currently under investigation.
“The allegation of disrupting social and religious harmony is highly sensitive. If the allegations are substantiated during the investigation, the accused will be brought under the law promptly, and exemplary punishment will be sought in accordance with the law. No one involved in such offences will be spared,” the official said.
Meanwhile, no statement from Abir Hossain or the administrators of his website was immediately available regarding the allegations.
Court sources further said that the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for 3 September 2026.
