Two passengers of a battery-run easy bike were killed and three others, including a woman, were seriously injured after a truck ran over the vehicle in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat this afternoon.The accident occurred on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway near Sonali Bank Suchona Chattar of Hatibandha. The injured were rescued and taken to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, where they are undergoing treatment, said Hatibandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarker.The deceased were identified as Jahurul Haque, 50, of Pashchim Sardubi under Barakhata union and Abdul Jalil, 52, of Singimari in Hatibandha upazila.According to witnesses, a truck was heading towards Burimari land port from Lalmonirhat. When it reached the Sonali Bank Suchona Chattar, it collided head-on with an easy bike travelling from Barakhata towards Hatibandha.The truck dragged the easy bike for some distance before crashing into a motorcycle showroom beside the highway. The easy bike was completely mangled in the impact, while several motorcycles inside the showroom were also damaged.

The two passengers died on the spot. Others sustained serious injuries.

Locals immediately rescued the injured and took them to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex. They are currently under treatment there. Locals also seized the truck following the accident, but the driver and helper fled the scene.Police recovered the truck and the badly damaged easy bike and took them to the police station. The bodies were also recovered.

The bodies will be handed over to the families after autopsies, the OC said, adding that police are preparing to file a case over the accident.
