Truck driver among dead; 16 bus passengers in critical condition
Three people were killed and at least 16 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Gopalganj town this afternoon.Two of the deceased were identified as truck driver Nadim Sheikh, 25, and Hasib, 26, a security guard of a company who was travelling in the truck. The third victim was a woman whose identity could not immediately be confirmed.Md Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star that a Gopalganj-bound Sonali Paribahan bus, travelling from Tekerhat, collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction at Boultali on the Gopalganj-Tekerhat regional highway around 2:00pm.The bus fell into a roadside ditch, while the front portion of the truck was crushed and the vehicle overturned on the road, he said.He further said the truck driver died on the spot. The injured were later rescued and taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital, where two others died while undergoing treatment.
At least 16 bus passengers were admitted to the same hospital.
Eyewitness Amanullah, 36, told The Daily Star that there were around 25 to 30 passengers on the bus and almost everyone was injured.
