The government has issued a landmark set of directives aimed at transforming the country’s railway sector, with an ambitious 180-day timeline to ensure visible progress. The instructions, provided by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, align with the commitments outlined in the election manifesto and have already triggered action within Bangladesh Railway.
As part of this initiative, plans are underway to introduce two new intercity train services on the Dhaka–Pabna–Dhaka and Dhaka–Khulna–Dhaka routes. Additionally, long-idle DEMU trains are set to be refurbished and converted into commuter trains to enhance short-distance travel. To improve passenger services, the government has directed a 25% fare discount on commuter trains for persons with disabilities, senior citizens above 65, and students—marking a significant step toward inclusive transportation.
Authorities have also emphasized aligning future railway projects with a long-term development vision by the 2026–27 fiscal year, alongside preparing a clear roadmap for priority initiatives to be completed by 2030.
Infrastructure development remains a key focus. The modernization of Syedpur Railway Workshop and the Central Locomotive Workshop has been prioritized, with plans to introduce advanced assembly facilities. The Economic Relations Division has been tasked with ensuring necessary funding for these projects. In a move to boost local capacity, the government is encouraging foreign investment and public-private partnerships to establish manufacturing plants for locomotives and carriages on railway-owned land. There are also plans to modernize existing workshops and introduce service contracts for locomotive maintenance.
The Director General of Bangladesh Railway, Afzal Hossain, is actively leading the implementation of these directives. Sources indicate that multiple initiatives are already in progress under his leadership to modernize the sector, improve service quality, and enhance passenger convenience. The DG has issued key instructions to all Additional Director Generals, General Managers, and departmental heads to ensure the timely execution of the Prime Minister’s 180-day action plan.
