An unidentified woman, aged around 70, died after being run over by a private car at the gate of Dhaka Medical College Hospital early today.
Kamran Molla, a resident of Badda, said he had arrived at the hospital at the time with an emergency patient. As their vehicle entered through the emergency gate near the police camp around 3:00am, the driver, identified as Alam, noticed what he believed to be an empty sack lying on the road.
The woman was in fact lying there, covered with a sack. Due to the urgency of transporting the patient, the driver proceeded and drove over it, unaware that it was a person, he said.
Shortly afterwards, realising the situation, the driver stopped the vehicle and rushed the injured woman to the hospital’s emergency department immediately, Kamran said.
Despite treatment, she died from her injuries around 5:30am.
Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death, citing attending doctors.
He said the driver has been handed over to Shahbagh Police Station, which is investigating the incident.
