A police constable was seriously injured in an attack during an anti-narcotics drive in Gazipur’s Tongi Bazar area last night.
The injured constable, Rahat Hossain, is currently undergoing treatment at Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital.
Sub-Inspector Tuhin Mia of Tongi East Police Station confirmed the incident to The Daily Star this afternoon.
According to eyewitnesses, police were carrying out routine anti-drug drives in different locations. During one such drive near the Islami Bank area of Tongi Bazar, Constable Rahat was suddenly attacked by suspected drug dealers.
He was critically injured in the assault, and locals quickly rescued him and took him to the hospital.
SI Tuhin Mia said Rahat Hossain is posted at Tongi East Police Station. A case has been filed against four to five unidentified individuals in connection with the attack, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved.
