Former Member of Parliament and political analyst Ghulam Mawla Rony has expressed opposition to the reported move to bring Bashundhara Residential Area under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

In a recent video statement, Rony said he has never felt insecure after moving to Bashundhara, unlike his previous experiences living in other parts of Dhaka. He mentioned that he had lived in Dhanmondi for nearly 30 years before relocating to Bashundhara, where he recently built a house.According to him, during his time in Dhanmondi and areas like Paltan, he often avoided going outside during unrest and even refrained from carrying valuables such as watches, wallets, or mobile phones due to security concerns.

Rony claimed that the internal environment of Bashundhara has remained highly secure and organized over the past several years. He said that even during the four years of construction work on his building, he did not hear of incidents requiring police intervention.

Questioning the possible inclusion of the area under DNCC administration, he asked what guarantee residents have that the current orderly environment of Bashundhara would not deteriorate and become similar to congested and problematic areas like Kalabagan, Jhigatala, Dhanmondi, or Gulshan. He further stated that the residents of Bashundhara currently feel comparatively safe and that many influential businesspeople and economically important individuals reside there. According to him, ensuring a secure and comfortable lifestyle for these residents is important for the country’s broader economy.

Rony also praised the management system inside Bashundhara, claiming that even Dhaka Cantonment does not maintain such a disciplined environment. He said traffic accidents are rare inside the area and that there is little need for traffic control due to its organized system.Comparing surrounding areas, he said roads outside Bashundhara — including the Badda Road, Madani Avenue, and areas near Jamuna Future Park — are heavily congested and difficult for pedestrians, while entering Bashundhara feels completely different.

He added that, apart from the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone, few areas in Dhaka can be compared with Bashundhara in terms of organization and security.
